I believe that Habanos has several brands that are underrated and usually they are out of the global catalog (brands that you can find in every country that sells Cuban cigars).
One of them is, without a doubt, the Quai D’Orsay.
For sure one of the reasons is that this brand was born as a regional brand for the French market, so it wouldn’t be that popular around the world.
The brand was named after a street in Paris where the main office of the Cuban cigars’ importer SEITA was located.
Quai D’Orsay’s big step took place in 2017, when at the Festival Del Habano the new band and two new Quai D’Orsay cigars – 50 and 54 – were presented.
Originally, the brand had a mild body strength scale, and this characteristic is still indicated by Habanos S/A today. However, I believe that it should be updated to “mild to medium” or even “medium” body.
My first experience with the brand was back in 2017, when the new ring was launched. At that time, a friend went to the Festival Del Habano and presented me with a Coronas Claro.
The next Quai D’Orsay I tried would be just when it became available worldwide and especially in Cuba, were I had the opportunity to buy a few boxes and age them.
I believe that the best Quai D’Orsay on regular production is the 54. Not that the others are bad, on the contrary, they are excellent cigars. However, the 54 is on another level. It is an “Edmundo Grueso”, with a 54 ring gauge and a 135mm length, a size that, if I’m not mistaken, has no other representative among Cubans.
As said before, the medium strength scale – in my opinion – combined with the aromatic profile and smoke time are unparalleled within the brand. I dare say that this cigar aged 2 or 3 years can possibly overcome the “Senadores”, a limited edition launched in 2019, as well as several regionals of the same brand.
It’s aromatic profile delivers notes of cedar, floral and, above all, sweet notes like caramel and sugar combined with a slightly salty base. The burning doesn’t seem very regular to me, often needing a correction with the lighter, but nothing that interferes too much with the smoke.
The draw is a little restricted – like all Cubans – but not plugged. The wrapper is light and oily.
The cigar was smoked from a box from August/2020, which certainly provided superior aromas than a younger cigar. This is quite interesting, given that it is usually not enough time to bring up these aromas and make a cigar that good – at least in the Cuban world.
An underrated cigar that delivers much more than it charges.
